Jilly at Forty (my favourite poem)

When you were born those years ago
so innocent and so sweet,
who would ever have thought
that we would ever meet.
Cause you might have been a Princess
living a life so high and grand,
with servants at your beck and call
everything you wished for at your hand.
You might have been an Actress
with talent in your finger tips,
flying to Worldwide destinations
on exotic filming trips.
Or you might have been a model
with looks so stunning and bright,
a figure that girls would kill for
and different clothes for every night.
You might have been a leader
in control of everything you see,
but if you were, you wouldn’t have had
any time for me.
I’m glad you’re not a Princess
with life so high and grand,
or a high flying actress
or someone who rules the land.
And I’m glad you’re not a model
so catty and upright,
all of those things that I have mentioned
for you just wouldn’t be right.
I’m grateful that you’re my Jilly
the girl that I adore,
you are the centre of my universe
each day I love you more.
And now that you are Forty
part-way through your wonderful life,
I don’t care what fate may bring me
because I have you as my beautiful wife.
To me you are a Princess
Model’s looks to yours don’t compare,
you can lead me to any destination
as long as our futures together we share.
And when old age’s race finally catches us
and the Reaper has us in his sights,
I’ll leave this World contented
remembering all of our love filled nights.
Though our parting may not be together
a short time may separate our call,
I know our love will always bind us
for eternity, forever, for us both and all.
